Home battery storage

Last reviewed: 20 July 2026

A home battery typically costs around £5,000. It stores electricity, from your solar panels or from a cheap overnight tariff, for use when you need it. The Warm Homes Loan can fund a battery up to £15,000, with or without solar.

What a battery does for you

With solar, a battery lifts how much of your own generation you actually use, from around 35% to about 70%. That means buying less from the grid and exporting less at the lower Smart Export Guarantee rate. On its own, a battery can still save money by charging on a cheap overnight tariff and discharging at peak times.

Does it pay?

It depends on your usage pattern and tariff. The solar and battery calculator lets you switch a battery on and off to see the difference for your home.
