How to fund solar panels
Last reviewed: 20 July 2026
There is no standalone solar grant for most households, but the Warm Homes Loan can fund solar up to £15,000 at a low rate, solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for electricity you send back to the grid.
The Smart Export Guarantee
Export tariffs currently range from around 12 pence to 16.5 pence per unit exported. The tariff you choose makes a real difference to your return, so it is worth comparing before you commit. A battery reduces how much you export but increases how much of your own generation you use, which is usually worth more per unit.
Low-income households
If you qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, solar can be funded within that where suitable, at no cost to you. Check with the funding wizard.
